What we collect

Account information

Signing in is optional. If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from your Google account. We request only the basic openid, email, and profile scopes. We never receive your Google password, and we have no access to your Gmail, Drive, Contacts, Calendar, or any other Google service.

Study activity

To make progress tracking, spaced repetition, and study insights work, we record:

• which questions you have marked as read or confident
• whether your answer was correct, and which option you selected
• how long you spent on a question, and how many attempts you made
• review scheduling data used by the spaced-repetition algorithm
• your study plan settings, such as target exam date and daily study time

What we do not collect

No payment or card details. No precise location data. No contacts. We do not show or serve advertising, and we never sell your data.

Why we collect it

Solely to provide the features you are using: showing your progress, scheduling reviews, building your study plan, and generating insights about your own performance. We also use aggregate, pseudonymous analytics (via PostHog) to understand which pages and question types help people study, so we can improve the app. We do not use your data for any other purpose.

Where it is stored

Study activity is saved in your browser’s local storage so the app works without an account. If you are signed in, it is also stored in MongoDB Atlas so your progress follows you across devices.

We rely on four service providers, and no others:

• Google — sign-in only
• MongoDB Atlas — database hosting
• Vercel — application hosting
• PostHog — privacy-friendly analytics, hosted in the US cloud

We do not sell your data. The only third party that receives any of it is PostHog, which processes pseudonymous analytics events and, when you are signed in, your email address and name so we can attribute usage to your account. No advertisers, no data brokers, no third-party marketing.

Cookies and local storage

We use a single session cookie to keep you signed in. PostHog sets a cookie holding a pseudonymous identifier so you are counted as one visitor across pages; it does not identify you. We do not use advertising cookies. Study progress is kept in your browser under the keys smriti_progress, smriti_plan, and smriti_goal; clearing your browser data removes the local copy.

How long we keep it

Your data is retained while your account is active. Ask us to delete it and we will remove your account record and all associated study data.

Your rights

You may request access to your data, correction of anything inaccurate, a copy of it, or its deletion. Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you may also withdraw consent at any time; signing out and clearing your browser data stops all further collection immediately.

Children

Smriti is intended for candidates preparing for competitive examinations and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page.
